year: 2013

place: California Institute of the Arts

Valencia California

AIA Honor Award for Design

The Northridge earthquake of January 1994 jolted the main building at the California Institute of the Arts off its foundations.

The new design for the school’s diverse community included dance, music and theater performance areas, video and film screening areas, art galleries, classrooms, seminar rooms, art studios, a boardroom and cafeteria. Additionally a graphic wayfinding program was created for the campus.

CalArts is a 24 hour-a-day campus. Durability of materials and building systems, maintenance and security of the equipment and state-of-the-art facilities, and personal safety for the students, faculty, staff and the public was a priority.
