Light Wash
year: 2008
place: Little Tokyo Arts District
Los Angeles CA
This project seeks to contribute to and comment upon the creation of a contemporary 24-hour urban environment in Little Tokyo. It marks the historic district of downtown Los Angeles that arose around the Japanese community. It is also the gateway to the new arts district that has brought a diverse nighttime energy to the neighborhood.
From a distance, the installation creates the impression of a ribbon, and the sense that the building is hovering above the plane of the sidewalk. From the perspective of pedestrians, the warm palette of red-orange creates a zone along the perimeter of the building that defines and energizes the activities within.
