          Mandeville Canyon

year: 2011

place: Los Angeles CA

This project, a pool house with bath and sauna, is set deep into the slope of a working garden filled with herbs and citrus. The rough-hewn stone of the poolside and pool house floor defines the ground plane, a counterpoint to the soft texture and fine detailing of the sandstone and teak building. The concrete ceiling of the main space is dotted with glass cylinders through which natural light creates shifting patterns on the stone floor.

The sauna is built of cedar. A narrow stair winds around the building to the rooftop terrace and returns to the garden. At night, light from within the pool house illuminates the glass circles cast within the terrace floor. A series of sloping concrete walls hold back the garden from the poolside.
