REFLECTANCE FIELD  is suspended within the interior void of the monumental main stair of the University of Oregon's new Tykeson Hall and touches every level of the building.

The siting within this place of chance encounters is intentional.

STRUCTURE:

70 cables spanning four stories

COMPONENTS:

1200 static and dynamic parts

CALIBRATION:

pentatonic scale C, E, G, A, D

INTERACTIVITY:

collaborative instrument play

EXPERIENCE:

chance encounters, chance music

It is composed of individual “threads” held in tension. From a distance, the first impression may be of a field of rain as the reflective surfaces create a play of light and movement. But REFLECTANCE FIELD is interactive, as 35 carefully placed chimes transform the sculpture into a collaborative musical instrument.

An abstract sculpture of static and dynamic elements, it brings a visual and auditory experience to Tykeson Hall that encourages collaboration and expression.

In CHANCE MUSIC some element of the composition is left to chance, and/or some primary element of a composed work is left to the determination of its performer(s).
